Of course, the timescale of glycemic changes that fluctuations in HbA1c reflect is orders of magnitude greater than the within-day fluctuations usually described in relation to glucose variability, and this has given rise to several proposed mechanisms for the observation that are unconnected to glucose variability per se (25).
The experimental setup is outlined in Figure 12B: it is similar in design to past olfactometers (Borst and Heisenberg, 1982; Kim et al., 2011) and it was adapted to produce a stimulus time course on the timescale of a typical run.
