The Christmas Bird Count was started by Frank Chapman, the editor of Audubon magazine, and has grown every year, with 60,000 volunteers last year counting nearly 70 million individual birds in all 50 states, every Canadian province and territory, parts of Central and South America, Bermuda, the West Indies, and Pacific Islands.
First, the criterion to choose the point where the count is started is modified.
