Just as attorneys -- as officers of the court -- have an ethical obligation to defendants who cannot afford counsel, a panel of statisticians should stand ready to testify in termination cases where their models are used in a way that offends their profession's sense of propriety.

William B. Canfield, a Republican lawyer and former counsel to that panel, said that given Mr. Corzine's global financial interests, he should be expected to divulge more information about his financial interests than most other candidates.

In his opening comments, Patrick Sadd, co-counsel to the panel, said it was "too late to right the wrongs of the past" but the issues needed to be brought into the open.
Victor Baird, the chief counsel of the ethics panel, would not comment on the Torricelli case this afternoon, saying that the panel does not publicly discuss such matters.
The panel's counsel, Fred Fielding, has also been invited to testify.
During her career she served as President of the United Nations Theater, Secretary of the Society of Writers, and Member of the U.N. Panel of Counsel.
The independent counsel, Robert W. Ray, convened the panel last month to consider whether Mr. Clinton should be charged with perjury or obstruction of justice after he leaves office in January, the officials said.
