A fundamental object of interest is P(Bi(xα)|I(xα)), the probability that the distribution measure Bi(xα) takes a certain value in the spatial cell xα conditioned on, I(xα), which is composed of, in principle, all biotic and abiotic variables that affect species distributions, and which constitute the biotic and abiotic profiles of the corresponding niche [10].
For each environmental condition, there is a corresponding ecological niche.
Extensive genomic analysis has demonstrated that the acquisition of novel genes by fungi, coming from another fungi or coming from a prokaryote, is often associated with increased cellular fitness to proliferation in the corresponding ecological niche.

If this suggestion holds, mixed forest should show multiple peaks in vertical distribution of foliage and highly undulating canopy surface corresponding to vertical niche partitioning between conifers and angiosperms.

This phenomenon is a geographical manifestation of Hutchinsons' duality concept, which elucidates the connection between a species' ecological niche and its corresponding biotope, as well as the reciprocity in projections between them (Colwell and Rangel 2009).
