In the subjects with primary infection there was a significant correlation between the selective advantage and the relative hazard of the presenting allele (P = 0.039 Spearman two-tailed) indicating that the correlation across the whole dataset was not due to a chance association between disease stage and HLA type.
To investigate this possibility we grouped the escape events into those occurring in subjects with chronic infection (N = 8) and those occurring in subjects with primary infection (N = 13) and tested for a correlation between the selective advantage and the relative hazard of the presenting allele within each group.
