Following the assessment, the nurse will provide individualised information, advice and support tailored to each patient, in order to help men improve their symptoms or cope better with symptoms they cannot improve.
So sensible guidance encourages a multi-faceted approach to sexuality, including: exercise to improve stamina and body image; improving skills to cope better with work and financial stress; and, for women, pelvic floor exercises to create better awareness of the muscles involved in sexual pleasure, boosting libido and self-esteem at a stroke.
However, when there were specific antenatal groups focussing on men's needs there were benefits in terms of reduced distress, increased ability to cope and improved relationship with their partner.
PE are associated with several beneficial outcomes in the personal and social realms: increased cognitive flexibility, motivation, social connectedness, health, resilience, emotion regulation, improved coping with grief, and in adolescents with reward-seeking behavior (Fredrickson, 2013; Gruber, Devlin, & Moskowitz, 2014).
It should be noted that fear, catastrophizing, passive coping and depression often improve with purely somatic-based treatments, when these treatments are successful in reducing pain [ 14, 119- 121].
