The concept of network orchestration speaks to a 'discrete influence' in the ecosystem that addresses the interdependencies and flexibility of actors in the network (Rizova 2006), enabling practical coordination of the innovation network and signaling the innovation output (Dhanaraj and Parkhe 2006).

Enabled by information technologies that have drastically reduced the costs of coordination, innovation ecosystems have become a core element in the growth strategies of firms in a wide range of industries.
