The unbelievably low ratio of convictions versus number of assaults, coupled with the fact that survivors face cross-examination from lawyers who, like Ghomeshi's lawyer Marie Henein, are known for their ability to "find a person's deepest frailties and exploit them," makes it easy to understand why a hashtag like #beenrapedneverreported gutted Twitter like a house fire.
To address this, we conducted sensitivity analysis using the original ordinal outcome for convictions in wave 4. As compared to the non-volunteers, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for conviction was 0.65 (95%% CI: 0.54, 0.78) for self-volunteers, 0.76 (95%% CI: 0.56, 1.0) for adult-required volunteers, and 2.0 (95 % CI: 1.5, 2.7) for court-ordered volunteers.
There was a significant association between receiving a psychiatric diagnosis at conscription and a future conviction for violent crime (odds ratio (OR) 3.83, 95%% confidence interval (CI) 3.47 4.22).
The conviction rate is 1.8 per cent".
For men, the adjusted hazard ratio for previous violent conviction was 2.3 (95% CI 2.1 2.6), resulting in a c-index of 69.4 for the adjusted model including age and comorbid substance use disorder.
For women, the adjusted hazard ratio for a previous violent conviction was 5.1 (95% CI 3.7 7.2).
The ORs approximate the adjusted RRs for wave 4 convictions (Table 2), suggesting that our rate ratio estimates are robust.
In the OMT data under study, the naïve incidence rate ratio estimate indicate about 60% fewer criminal convictions while in treatment as compared to not in treatment, for both men and women.
That is, while criminal activity is relatively uniformly distributed for the cohort as a whole, as indicated by the rate ratio estimates, with a reduced level while in treatment, on an individual level criminal convictions are clustered.
