Dr Luke Alphey founded the company Oxitec to develop genetic control strategies for harmful insects and has pioneered the use of GM mosquitoes to help control dengue fever.
"The only way to control dengue will be with the vaccine," Uip said.
"There are a number of hurdles we still need to overcome before we get to the stage where Wolbachia can control dengue," said Hoffman.

The insects were created with the aim of controlling dengue fever, but opponents worry that not enough testing has been done to warrant release into the wild.
