LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Despite the economy, officials with the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon say contributions and pledges from the Labor Day event this year totaled $58.9 million.
On Tuesday, the House Committee on Government Reform, led by Representative Dan Burton, an Indiana Republican, subpoenaed records of all contributions and pledges of more than $5,000 to the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation.
Uber gave $18,111 in in-kind contributions and pledged $10,000 to help pay for a fleet of canvassers to collect signatures on the street.
These secondary victims deserve help too, and the institutions best able to provide it are the private organizations that are sitting on $1.3 billion in contributions and pledges.
The pardon has resulted in widespread criticism of Mr. Clinton and questions in Congress and elsewhere over whether the pardon was related to large contributions and pledges by Ms. Rich to the Democratic Party and the Clinton library project.
"It was a random sampling of contributions and pledges to relief funds based on information available at the time," she said, adding, "This was just an item on the ticker".
The group used a team of professional fund-raisers around the country to gain access to major Republican donors and then cited the threat of Democratic advocacy groups in securing contributions and pledges.
Last month, she marked her 40th birthday with a fund-raiser at a Midtown restaurant, taking in $510,000 in campaign contributions and pledges, one of the highest totals ever for a council member.
It has allocated more than $600 million for the effort through last year, compared with only $21 million by oil-rich Nigeria, according to the most recent accounting of contributions and pledges.
It has received contributions and pledges of $21 million toward the new goal -- though like virtually every other arts organization, it took a beating last fall when donors redirected their giving to Sept. 11 charities.
