Factors that contribute to the learner's ability to suspend disbelief include fidelity, psychological safety, emotional buy-in, the fiction contract, and how learners assign meaning.
In our context of multiple data sources contributing to the learner model, with use by learners and teachers (and possibly peers and parents), we need a generally understandable approach to learner model negotiation.
For example, in addition to the visualisations shown in Fig. 1, the Next-TELL OLM provides a list of each piece of evidence and its source (teacher, student, peer or automated assessment), including the weighting of the evidence, to allow users to gauge the extent and type of information contributing to the learner model data (Johnson et al. 2013a).
Extrinsic motivation may lead to selection of a task that contributes to the learner's short- or long-term personal goals (e.g., career aspirations).
All completed assignments contribute to the learner's documented portfolio.
I hope, too, that I will be able to call on the community of learners who read and contribute to this column - if only to reassure myself and others in the profession that we still have time to think about learning and teaching, albeit for an hour on a Sunday evening, having marked the last set of books and prepared the lesson plans for the next week.
The third design principle of the SICME, which emphasized facilitating learning through learner-centered teaching methods and teacher-centered lectures, seems to have contributed to this result.
