Electron micrographs composing the series were imported, stacked, and aligned in the reconstruction software OpenCAR (Contour Alignment Reconstruction; Sätzler et al. 2002).

This difference between results may be related to the task, as Li et al. manipulated the alignment of contour elements in the vicinity of the neurons' RFs, whereas the cue segment in the curve-tracing task that determines the identity of target and distracter curve is generally at a larger distance from the RFs.
