We have developed a new BMI framework in which a computational agent symbiotically decoded users' intended actions by utilizing both motor commands and goal information directly from the brain through a continuous Perception-Action-Reward Cycle (PARC).
Since forward motion regularly induces bilateral optic flow stimuli continuous motion perception would be rather distracting.
We use magnetoencephalography (MEG) to monitor brain oscillations in 22 participants during continuous speech perception.
This suggests a close relationship between (left-lateralized) speech production areas and the implementation of top-down control in continuous speech perception.
Together, our results suggest that low-frequency brain oscillations play a role in implementing predictive top-down control during continuous speech perception and that top-down control is largely directed at left auditory cortex.
More importantly, however, they show an influence of the final percept during continuous viewing on perception during the subsequent intermittent presentation sequence.
Overall, the pattern of results is indicative of a continuous coupling between perception and action, analogous to that observed in locomotor interception tasks.
