Colder water is denser, so water from a melting cube sinks, stirring up warmer water, which causes the ice cube to continue melting.
"If the tundra continues melting," says Hal Harvey, the chief executive of Energy Innovation, "we could basically release the equivalent of all the carbon that all humanity has emitted from the start of history to now".
"Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and Fall approaches".
The report calls for deeper research into the theory that, as the ice caps continue melting at an alarming rate, global warming will reach a "tipping point" from which the Earth's ecology will be "fundamentally disrupted".
They are wrong, but might soon be right: that is, if we let the arctic continue melting, and the methane stored in the Eastern Siberian shelf come out, the problem won't have much to do with us any longer, as even just a few percent of it would swamp all attempts to control warming, shifting the planet rapidly to a new state.
