Financial crises and shocks, social norms and the stigma surrounding vulnerable families and children with disabilities, as well as the lack of funds for social services for families, remain leading causes for continued institutionalization of children to this day.
Instead of, or in conjunction with, providing 'answers' to the social, ethical and political issues associated with new biomedical technologies, bioethicists should be asking tough questions about, for example, government and industry involvement in biomedicine, the continued institutionalization of inequity in access to health care and other social services, or global (in)justice [ 35].
