The show is displayed chronologically, but backward, beginning upstairs and then continuing downstairs toward the entrance.
Others continued to move downstairs, but did so in a more relaxed way, waiting for elevators instead of tackling the stairs and taking the time to turn off computers, gather purses and briefcases, or use the bathroom.
"The idea is that you put your elderly parent or your college student who you can't get rid of in the downstairs," she continued.
The eccentricity of downstairs continues into the bedrooms, where vibrant walls provide a backdrop for unusual, hand-picked antique furniture.
Barlow's obsession with her choice of constituents – cardboard, extruded foam and board – continues in the downstairs gallery, with a parade of richly coloured, sculptural objects.
For now, the couple plan to live together in both apartments, and for nostalgic reasons, will continue their upstairs-downstairs romance.
"Our house had two bedrooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs — we call it 'two up and two down,' " she continued.
"So," he continued, "I was thinking you were black... and then you came downstairs, and I thought, 'Okay, maybe her husband's black.'".
The downstairs brasserie continues to be open to the public, with Daniel Orr's food.
