Prior research has generally shown encouraging results for interventions based on 'Contingency Management' (CM), in which desirable behaviour is encouraged by providing rewards contingent upon the behaviour.
"The slowdown is likely to shift the focus back to longer term structural pressures with upside increasingly contingent on management's ability to deliver its turnaround strategy," said Daniel Kerven, of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
"The plan is realizable, but it is contingent on management being able to sell the assets and being able to convince creditors to accept the debt-for-equity swap and that won't be easy because it is clear that the management will try to cancel most of the debt," said Andrea Paladini, an analyst with the Centrosim brokerage firm in Milan.
Its analyst Andrew Shepherd-Brown said: "Although historical issues are relevant to assessing contingent liabilities, management has made rapid progress, the group is fully funded with £90m of cash and a further £55m in escrow, and investors can now look to the future".
