Honorable Mentions: Since no contest is complete without a few honorable mentions, I thought I'd honorably mention two titles that will someday make great anthems: "When a Man Writes a Caption," by Sean Carman, Washington, D.C. In my humble opinion, the results of this contest are complete and utter bullshit.
The contest took place in spring 2017 and it was completed during a final contest session in May 2017.
Assuming the majority recognizes a need to protect the votes of Florida's presidential electors, the entire contest must be completed "at least six days before" Dec. 18, 2000, the date the presidential electors meet to vote.
The worry that clearly preoccupied the justices was that if they did not rush the recount process, insufficient time would remain for contesting the certified results, and that would make it impossible for Florida to meet the federal requirement that a "final determination of any controversy or contest" must be completed by Dec. 12 if a state's electoral votes are to be counted.
She made it clear she had no intention of withdrawing before the remaining six contests were complete.
Randall Bezanson, a constitutional law expert at the University of Iowa, said there was a "certain strange ironic twist" to the decision because it was based on the United States Supreme Court's determination that the Florida Legislature intended all election contest battles to be completed by Dec. 12, the date under federal law when election contests are to be completed.
Absent further weather delays, the contest might still be completed on Sunday evening.
Federal law specifies that by that date, six days before electors meet to vote, a "final determination of any controversy or contest" under state law must be completed if the choice of electors is to be deemed conclusive.
Since Florida's electors need not be selected until Dec. 12, there is time for these contests of the election to be completed in a fair fashion.
