Until this week, the highest average price for a gallon of regular blend gasoline since the consumer department started to keep records in the late 1980's was $1.89 in May 2001, said John P. Gaccione, a spokesman for the department.
The consumer marketing departments of individual magazines will be folded into a central operation.
"The money is theoretical," said Arthur Goldstein, chairman of the business education and family and consumer science departments in the Syosset school system.
