The model identifies 'appraisal, illness, behavioural, scheduling and treatment delays' referring to the time between a patient first detecting change, appraising change, inferring illness, deciding to consult, visiting primary care, and referral, diagnosis and commencement of treatment (see Figure 1).
All consenting participants (N = 494) completed the Web-based Personal Patient Profile – Prostate (P3P) query component at baseline either on touch-screen computers in the clinic waiting rooms prior to the consult visit with a cancer specialist, or at home for men who had broadband Internet access.
They believed that this level of detail would facilitate providers' discussions with patients during consult visits [citation 6].
The initial consult visit and up to two additional subsequent visits are audio-recorded and directly observed using field observation methods.
Also, as only one diagnosis can be billed for each consult, visits for MSD may be underestimated if children present with multiple conditions where MSD is not coded.
For example a Victoria Hospice physician may see a patient in an acute care hospital and that would be recorded as a consult visit.
Investigators were prompted to report specific information about the clinical process in general regarding number of consultations, length of time between biopsy and disclosure of results, and/or treatment decision making, type of specialists at the site, length of time between consult visit, method of disclosing biopsy results, and if educational material was given to patients.
Retrospectively it was not possible to appreciate reason of consulting visits from ED database.
With regard to diagnostic work-up, the number of specialist consulting visits requested by ED physicians was high (28.2% of all patients), similar to frequencies reported by other studies (10 40%) [8, 18].
Dr Pugsley also pioneered services in Central Australia with intermittent consulting visits, before the full-time appointment of Dr Meshach Kirubakaran (Box 1 ).
In her home consulting visits, she suggests easy substitutes known to be nontoxic or other solutions, such as replacing very old vinyl miniblinds (purchased before the late 1990s), which could release lead.
