Factor analysis has consistently yielded three factors that assess the salient features of the alexithymia construct: difficulty identifying feelings (F1); difficulty describing feelings (F2); and externally-oriented thinking (F3).
Our data demonstrated a statistically significant difference (p <0.01 and p <0.05) for the three factors of the alexithymia construct (difficulty identifying feelings, F1; difficulty describing feelings, F2; externally-oriented thinking, F3) as well as for the total score of the TAS-20.
One limitation of the HeRQoLED-S is that its items did not cover the entire range of existing difficulties, and gaps in construct difficulty were detected.
Although including more items would have helped cover the different levels of construct difficulty, this was not possible because we were working with a predetermined set of items and selected those that provided the best distribution despite the gaps.
The self-report questionnaire the Authors used, beyond the total alexithymia score, provides three separate, yet conceptually related, facets of the alexithymia construct: difficulty identifying feelings and distinguishing them from the somatic sensations that accompany emotional arousal (F1), difficulty communicating feelings to other people (F2) and externally oriented thinking (F3).
