Field blanks exposed to the atmosphere in a manner similar to the actual well water samples can be used to enumerate background levels caused by deposition of enteric bacteria in ambient air during the sampling process, for example, a field transfer sample: At our field sites, the geometric mean of the transfer blanks is 1.4 cfu/100 mL with a considerable standard deviation.
The variation within each group of elongation rates was considerable, with standard deviations of 0.43 kb/min, 0.69 kb/min and 0.79 kb/min for the early, mid and late rates, respectively.
