They work under high environmental and logistic constraints, managing pastures located at considerable altitudes (1500 1700 m).
As a result of considerable difference in altitude along their length, some rivers have great hydroelectric potential.
The western Kenya highlands are an area of particular interest based on the fact that on a relatively small spatial scale, there is considerable variation in altitude, water accumulation, and land-use patterns.
