In this study, immunohistochemical analyses were undertaken for two main reasons, to compare expression patterns with previously published results and to see whether phenotypic characteristics of implanted tissue would be conserved in the models.
However, the sum of the state variables x E - G l c e and x E - G l c i, and x E e and x E i is conserved in the reduced model, which makes it possible to reduce the model to two state variables.
To determine whether this is also conserved in the Drosophila model, we repeated our analysis in the presence or absence of Ird5 function, the IKK homologue in the fly [ 19, 26].
