The paper "cuts against much of the ethos of the conservation movement that wants to preserve absolutely pristine environments," says Sir Robert May, a zoologist at the University of Oxford.

The relatively recent distancing between research and public health practice in the fields of infectious disease and environmental health stems in large part from the influence of the conservation movement on the development of environmental health in the United States, as well as on shifting political priorities in the late 20th century (McNeill 2000).
