At Columbia he studied grammar and composition and gravitated toward courses taught by politically and socially conscious professors.
"There's a lot of modification of the effects of medications and drugs by anticipation, either conscious or non-conscious," Professor Kaptchuk says.
A famous case of "minimally conscious," said Dr. Michael P. McQuillen, a professor of neurology at the University of Rochester, was that of a woman who appeared vegetative but, on overhearing her sister on the phone making funeral arrangements for a favorite uncle, began to cry.
"Entrepreneurs are experimenting with how to appeal to users who are privacy-conscious and benefit from that," Professor Matwyshyn said.
"This is a new face of new New York: an upscale, health-conscious district," said Robert Snyder, a professor of journalism and American studies at Rutgers who has written about the history of Union Square, a longtime site of political rallies and of the first Labor Day parade in 1882.
He added, though, that while he aspires to be a history professor, he was "extremely conscious of the contraction of job opportunities" in publishing and academia.
"I think it's a good thing to make officers more conscious of race," says Deborah A. Ramirez, a professor at Northeastern University Law School and a consultant to the Department of Justice.
Spurr's acutely conscious of his status as a professor at an elite university – in one of the messages, he berates another staff member for not bestowing him with his full title.
"I don't have to be conscious of this," said Nilanjana Dasgupta, a psychology professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
"Many studies show that people have shorter and more superficial conversations in open offices because they're self-conscious about being overheard," said Anne-Laure Fayard, a professor of management at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University who has studied open offices.
Whether this is artistic training, a personality trait — her father was a sociology professor at University of California, Los Angeles — or a conscious musical strategy doesn't matter.
