A new smart bike pedal from a French company called Connected Cycle could help prevent that theft, while also helping users to track data about their rides.

The HCRNet is based on the Cube Connected Cycle (CCC) interconnection pattern proposed for multiprocessor architectures.
Once installed, the Connected Cycle smart pedal will alert bike owners when their bike has been moved via mobile app.
Also at CES, French firm Connected Cycle showed off its smart pedal that it hopes will help reduce the number of cycles being stolen.
Connected Cycle's pedal looks like any other but, he said, it can be used to turn an old, dumb bike into one that is much smarter.
"In Europe six bikes are stolen every minute and everyone who cycles in a city knows that bike theft is a real problem," said Connected Cycle founder Jean-Marie Debbasch.
In particular, given a set of telephone exchanges, we must design a collection of ring-stars, where each ring-star is a cycle composed of a telephone exchange, some customers, some transition points used to save routing costs and customers not on the cycle connected to the cycle by a single edge.
The idea is for the bike path to connect existing cycle lanes, making it possible for cyclists to pedal seamlessly in and out of the city.
