A path connecting two vertices (i,j in V_y) is said to be minimal if there is no other path connecting (i) to (j) with less links.
The redundancy (rho_{ij}) of the edge connecting i to j is simply the number of layers in which the edge appears, divided by the total number of layers in the network.
Our method is that if an alternative path exists, (overline{{I_{ij} }}^) will be closer to or even larger than (overline{{I_{ij} }}) and C ij will be close to 1. Otherwise, (L_{ij}^) will be a relatively straight line passing through background with low intensity connecting i and j, and thus (C_{ij} ll 1).
The arrows indicate the paths i → j for every nonzero entry ( D + P ) ( i, j ) of the matrix D + P. For any ordered pair of nodes i and j, there exists a direct path ( i, l 1 → ), ( l 1, l 2 → ), …, ( l k, j → ) connecting i to j.
The information necessary to describe all such links in a network can be encoded as an adjacency matrix A, an N × N matrix such that a ij = 1 if ( i, j ) ∈ E ( i.e. there is an edge connecting i and j ) 0 otherwise, (1).
