Barring some earlier work on recording errors in psychology (Rosenthal, 1978; Rossi, 1987), we know of no studies addressing the congruence of statistical results reported in psychology journals.
We checked the congruence of statistical results reported in all the papers of volumes 409 412 of Nature (2001) and a random sample of 63 results from volumes 322 323 of BMJ (2001).
- To assess the quality of analgesic treatments in terms of congruence between patients' reported level of pain (intensity) and the potency of the prescribed analgesic drug (according to the WHO analgesic ladder) [ 19].
The congruence of maternal self-report with clinical report or hospital records for perinatal events has been demonstrated exhaustively, particularly for mode of birth and caesarean section [ 30- 32].
According to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) guidelines for the management of pain in cancer, treatment is considered adequate when there is congruence between the reported level of pain of the patient and the potency of the prescribed analgesic drug (its place on the WHO analgesic ladder; WHO, 1996).
