The purpose of this article is to outline the methods used by the five Centers for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Childrenn's Centers) that are conducting birth cohort studies.
The study was carried out in two purposively selected districts of Gujarat which were part of a larger parent study (MATIND), which recorded every facility conducting births in the two districts using GPS mapping.
The urban component of the study was conducted in Birth to Twenty (Bt20), a birth cohort study located in Soweto, Johannesburg which enrolled all singleton children born to women resident in the area from April to June 1990.

Infant study visits were conducted at birth and at 4 6 weeks of age.
