ON a recent blustery Sunday afternoon in downtown Manhattan, a classical composer named Andrew Shapiro was performing a solo piano concert -- a collection of short rhythmic pieces he calls "Piano Etudes". The music, which he says is inspired by 1970's minimalism, was not deeply unusual.
