To reduce the human effort and to promote semantic transferability, we propose an automated method for deriving a probabilistic grammar based on a training corpus consisting of concept strings and semantic classes from the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), a comprehensive terminology resource widely used by the community.
The annotators were given the concept strings and asked to classify each concept into one or more of the broad class es), which they considered appropriate.
Lexical associations (i.e. auscultated, palpated, history or symptom, etc) included in many of the concept strings helped guide some of the obvious groupings.
