Regulatory or project-specific criteria (acceptable concentrations of priority OWCs) would enable assessment of ecosystem impacts and demonstration of practitioner compliance.
Concentrations of priority PAHs ranged from 2.4 to 420 μg/g dry soil, and the chemical composition is similar to that noted for soils from other gasworks sites [ Wilson and Jones, 1993; Kilbane, 1998; Eriksson et al., 2000; Saponaro et al., 2002], which typically contain a variety of high and low molecular weight PAHs and O- and S-heterocyclic compounds [ Haeseler et al., 1999].
Moreover, it is commonly assumed that decreases in the concentration of priority substances are correlated with decreases in toxicological activity.
The Commission Staff Working Document "Impact Assessment" [103] requires from the WFD to submit proposals covering (1) quality standards applicable to the concentrations of the priority substances in surface water, sediments or biota (Article 16 7) WFD) and (2) for priority substances controls for the progressive reduction of discharges, emissions and losses.
Furthermore, environmental quality standards (EQSs) for the concentrations of these priority substances in the water phase and biota were defined toward a better level of protection in retrospective risk assessment.
Eighteen soil samples were collected and analyzed to determine concentrations of 16 priority PAHs and BaP equivalents at different distances from the oil sands facilities in Cold Lake, Alberta, and results are summarized in Table 1 and Figure 2.
These should be of a sufficient volume to assess 17OHP, testosterone, androstenedione and, possibly, renin activity or concentration, in that order of priority.
Concentrations of aluminum and 11 priority pollutants (Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Se, Ag, Tl and Zn) were greatest (P < 0.01) during low (< 6.5) pH episodes, particularly when coincident with high discharge, such that aluminum and copper concentrations were at times high enough to pose a risk to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
Total concentrations of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, the priority 16 PAHs of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), and the total organic carbon (TOC) content of each sediment were measured in the course of a previous study [10] and are provided in Table 1.
The objective of this programme is to improve the management and control of concentrations of Water Framework Directive (WFD) Priority Substances and other substances of potential concern that may be entering the environment via WwTP effluents.
Additionally, extinction is irreversible, so protecting biomes with high concentrations of threatened species is a priority.
