Instead of manually typing plate numbers into a computer, officers on patrol can check thousands of cars against stolen car databases as they pass them on the street.
Prosecutors had spent much of the day offering testimony and pictures that the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it had found on two computers Officer Valle had used, along with exhibits showing his Internet searches.
On Tuesday, Corey Walsh, an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, testified that a search of personal computers Officer Valle used showed that he had created files on scores of potential victims like Ms. Sauer.
His father is a senior computer systems officer in the New Castle office of Citigroup.
He later worked for the Ampex Federal Credit Union in Redwood City, Calif., from which he retired as a computer operations officer.
"What we've been using in the past is a sledgehammer," said Michael E. Ronayne, a computer security officer who lives in Nutley, N.J.
Several pieces of evidence from independent sources, including the intercepted conversations, point to one possible suspect, according to David Brumley, a computer security officer at Stanford University.
David J. Brumley, assistant computer security officer for Stanford, said the type of data included in the packets used to attack Yahoo on Monday differed from the data in the Tuesday assault on eBay.
"Security professionals know about these attacks," says Ralph Langham, computer service officer for the U.S. Trust Co. "The general public does not".
