At the dawn of the computing age, from the 1950s to 70s, IBM and seven other manufacturers (e.g. Honeywell, RCA, UNIVAC) worked on major mainframe computation projects for government agencies.
The computation of age- and sex-standardized PQIs by LHA was demanding: for each LHA (n = 44), in each year (n = 3), demographic and admission data need to be extracted and tabulated in several strata (two genders and seven 10-year age classes) for each PQI (n = 16).

Few tests continue to involve the computation of mental ages.
