In order to make inferences on the most likely locations for ancestors corresponding to nodes in the tree, terminal branches of the tree were assigned to six geographic macroregions, that is, Central-Western Africa, Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, Northern Africa, Europe, and rest of the world (comprising Near East and other continents).
