MF59 is a component of the flu vaccine FLUAD™, which has been used clinically in over 20 European countries [ 17].
Mr. Rowe, a research biologist, wore two pairs of latex gloves as he handled samples containing infectious components of the "bird flu" virus, known as influenza A(H5N1), under a safety hood in the laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here.
The authors of the Australian study said the robust response implied that there was some previously unsuspected crossover protection from having had previous strains of H1N1 seasonal flus or from the H1N1 components of seasonal flu shots.

This new strain making headlines and killing people contains genetic components of human flu virus, avian flu virus and - for the first time ever - two types of swine flu virus: American and Eurasian.
