After its main science operations are completed, the probe's extended mission is to be the communication and navigation system for landers and rover probes.
Once this is completed the probe length is reduced by 50 bases (configurable) and the window re-tiled, generating more candidate probes.
It follows a four-year inquiry by government inspectors whose report will not be publicly released until the SFO has completed its probe.
After the heat-flow measurements were completed, the probe system was winched out of the seafloor and the water depth was estimated from the point at which the rope between the ROV and the probe system grew taut (Figure 5b); this was determined from the winch and depth records (Figure 6).
The specificity of the new probes was tested with 56 strains of the Azospirillum-Rhodocista-Skermanella-cluster and selected reference cells from other genera by hybridising with the complete probe set.

The complete probe set used for microarray analysis contained all annotated genes for nitrogen metabolism for each included genome, and in many cases, genes from both nitrate assimilation and dissimilatory nitrate/nitrite reduction pathways were present in the same organism.
Therefore, we examined individual probes instead of complete probe sets.
Each complete probe array image was stored in a separate data file.
