Nor have there been many other male characters to look up to in recent comedies -- a situation that Ms. Thopesr-Scully hopes to remedy with "Complete Savages," her alternative to the mother-knows-best sitcom formula.
Riding in the wake of CBS's "Two and a Half Men," last year's most successful new sitcom, "Complete Savages" (Fridays at 8 30 p.m. on ABC beginning Sept. 24) is not the only network comedy looking for fresh laughs from father figures.
