The two sources of information are complementary: environmental information gives direct information regarding location relative to the environment, whereas self-motion information can be used to update the estimate of environmental location (spatial updating), or to estimate the displacement caused by a recent movement (path integration).
The results of the application to a case previously analyzed by the authors, Al Azraq Oasis, show that the two techniques can be successfully used in a combined way because they give complementary information: while CVA gives a meaning of the surface change, MAF gives a slightly more detailed map of the change on the surface.
