Sony held a competition, "Mission for a Million," enabling registered players to use their products to complete certain tasks.
The competition mission was then toughened and made a bit less abstract by requiring teams to search for a toxic waste dump, map the location of partially buried randomly oriented toxic waste drums, identify the contents of each drum from the hazard labels found somewhere on the outside of each drum, and bring a sample back from one of the drums all without any human intervention whatsoever.
As CNET's Rafe Needleman observed, Ting is striving to be "less evil" than the competition – a mission that, in today's market, is an utter no-brainer.
Meanwhile the variety of weapons, racers, competitions and missions to play through mean there's a great deal of longevity on offer.
