The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has adopted the Scholar role as one of the core competencies of specialty training that has translated to the expectation of a contribution to research in training.
Additionally, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) now requires education in 'systems-based practice' and 'practice-based learning and improvement' as core competencies of residency training programmes.
