Judge Carl Barbier, the federal judge hearing the lawsuits relating to the disaster, agreed in part, saying that Transocean's contract with BP shielded it from compensatory claims.
"BP is required to indemnify Halliburton for third-party compensatory claims that arise from pollution or contamination that did not originate from the property or equipment of Halliburton located above the surface of the land or water, even if Halliburton's gross negligence caused the pollution," Judge Barbier wrote.
Under the settlement, BP will indemnify Weatherford for current and future compensatory claims resulted from the incident and the impact of the event, including for environmental, pollution, personal, business, property and economic loss claims.
