As we saw in his account of causation, demonstrative reasoning consists in comparing ideas to find relations among them, while probable reasoning concerns matters of fact.
The understanding discovers the abstract relations of ideas by demonstration (a process of comparing ideas and finding congruencies and incongruencies); and it also discovers the causal (and other probabilistic) relations of objects that are revealed in experience.
In Occasional Thoughts, Lady Masham takes a Lockean position when she argues that we derive our knowledge of God by comparing ideas "received from Sense and Reflection" and that the idea of God is "a Proposition containing many complex Ideas in it; and which we are not capable of framing till we have been long acquainted with pleasing Sensations" (Occasional Thoughts, p. 66).
Among the critical thinking skills are comparing ideas about a reading, summarizing group opinions, drawing conclusion from the chart, clarifying ideas and speculating, paraphrasing, analyzing the facts, evaluating opinions, supporting and challenging a hypothesis, analyzing the author's point of view, separating fact from opinion, and analyzing cause and effect.
In these cases the students seemed to be evaluating and comparing ideas in an attempt to judge which idea was better.
If we understand the terms this way, the argument can be read not as showing that the faculty of reason (or the beliefs it generates) cannot cause us to make moral judgments, but rather as showing that the reasoning process (comparing ideas) is distinct from the process of moral discrimination.
