We confirmed the validity of our diagnostic coding by reviewing a subset of charts, revealing a small error rate compared to the documented clinical impression and no evidence for bias in misdiagnosis favoring either group.
What was different compared to the medical document review was that we did not extract data by entering it into a Microsoft Word table, but rather coded the relevant learning outcomes using ATLAS.ti software (ATLAS.ti Scientific Software Development GmbH).
Binary yes/no answers were used to evaluate self-assessed comprehension, eg, "did you understand what was wrong with you/your diagnosis?" The same questions reformulated to obtain descriptive answers were compared to the discharge document in order to evaluate correct recall, eg, "write in your own words what was wrong with you/your diagnosis".
