In the Spring semester, students design and implement a community research project with a goal of enhancing the students' skills in communicating the importance of science in the real world.
The nature of "partnerships" of the community can vary from community representatives acting as an advisory board to researchers [ 24], to the community directing research projects with researchers only providing technical expertise [ 29].
Such a method would, among other benefits, inform resource allocation decisions, encourage research participation among increasingly busy clinicians, and create accountability to the community for research projects.
At the centre of these challenges is the ongoing struggle to achieve high recruitment/response rates in community based research projects.
Recent changes in the French policy for granting research nowadays tend to favor shorter term projects and the authors want to inform the scientific community that research projects in the spirit of the present one -i.e. long term experiments not strongly oriented towards industrial concerns- are becoming more and more difficult to launch.
Residents of environmentally compromised communities typically want additional information regarding their environmental health, and due to this gap in infrastructure, such communities have begun partnering with research organizations and universities to conduct community-engaged research projects [ 19, 20].
The Center for Global Health and Development CGHDD) of Boston University in partnership with local partners, including the District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) conducted two community-based research projects in Zambia that showed the feasibility and effectiveness of using CHWs and TBAs to provide integrated community case management (CCM) and newborn care [ 4, 5].
Community-based research projects are critically needed to reduce health disparities and ensure the delivery of health care that is culturally appropriate and relevant to families and communities.
The research activity at the Centre has focused on malaria and a number of clinical, laboratory and community-based research projects are underway.
The National Institutes of Health grants are for five years and include $22.7 million to Cal State Long Beach, $21.8 million to Cal State Northridge and $17 million to San Francisco State University to develop mentorship programs, engage students' families, improve instruction and develop community-based research projects.
Surveys have been widely used in community-based research projects, including both general population surveys and surveys of particular population groups, such as college students (discussed below in Community Indicators on Alcohol and Alcohol-Related Harm; see also the table).
