For chemicals considered to have a common mechanism of toxicity (commonality of target tissue, target site, and primary toxicologic effects for the members of a chemical class), dose additivity is the default hypothesis for assessing the hazard of mixtures (U.S. EPA 1999 U.S. EPA 2002a).
