This GC-rich yeast genome (45.7%) appears phylogenetically related with the few other nitrate-assimilating yeasts sequenced so far, Ogataea polymorpha, O. parapolymorpha, and Dekkera bruxellensis, with which it shares a very reduced number of tRNA genes, a novel tRNA sparing strategy, and a common nitrate assimilation cluster, three specific features to this group of yeasts.
Murat Bicak, the business director for the product at Honeywell Specialty Materials, said, "We expect that its cost will run at a slight premium to common nitrate-based fertilizers based on its unique attributes, including safety and effectiveness".
Sequences that contained additional molybdopterin-binding domains (PFam identifier: PF00174) were excluded from further analyses as this is a feature common to nitrate reductases, which are structurally closely related to CBRs but involved in different processes (Truong et al., 1991).
