Because common-law couples have most of the same rights and obligations in Canada as married couples -- from jointly filing tax returns to spousal support after a breakup -- many gay couples here do not see much reason to marry.
Much of the proposed legislation actually extends common-law benefits and obligations even further for heterosexuals -- for example, the provision preventing the transfer of money to a spouse shortly before bankruptcy, which now applies only to married couples, would apply to common-law couples as well.
Of the 32,185 reported families: 77% were married couples with an average of 3.2 persons per family, 15% were lone-parents with an average of 2.5 persons per family, and 8% were common-law couples with an average of 2.6 persons per family.

Paula Myers, from specialist will dispute lawyers Irwin Mitchell, who represented Ms Williams, said: "There is no such thing as a common law husband or wife and couples who live together do not automatically have the same rights as a married couple or those in a civil partnership," she said.
