Functional constipation can be caused by delayed colonic transit or dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles.
The manifestations of diabetic neuropathy lead to many symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract, including diabetic gastroparesy, diabetic enteropathy, esophageal motor dysfunction, colonic hypomobility, and rectum-anal dysfunction [ 2].

The underlying mechanisms for CC in older adults include primary slow colonic transit, pelvic floor dysfunction, or a combination of the two.
